Having received his Doctor Degree in Limnology/Oceanography from The University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1977, Dr. Bowers spend ten years at The University of Michigan in the Great Lakes and Marine Waters Center performing research in the areas of pelagic ecosystems, deep-sea submersibles, and environmental toxicology. Dr. Bowers was a participant on the National Undersea Research Program's (NURP/NOAA) first dives to the bottom of the upper Laurentian Great Lakes.

Currently working at the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site for the Westinghouse Savannah River Co. as a Fellow Research Scientist, Dr. Bowers' activities have focused on ecological risk assessment for Superfund wastesites and environmental information systems. This most recent research project was an applied software development program initially funded by the DOE Office of Science and Technology. The objective of this project was to develop an environmental data warehouse for wastesite databasing (Bowers 1994). Jointly developed by the Savannah River Technology Center and HOPS International Inc., DataDelve Client and EcoTrack Server offers end-users a data warehouse operating within a true georegistered construct and true ad hoc querying capabilities. Current research and development activities center on the application of fuzzy logic and neural nets to decision support systems for risk assessments.

Dr. Bowers has served as a grant referee for the National Science Foundation (Ecology and Biological Oceanography Programs), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Sea Grant Program, National Undersea Research Program (NOAA), United States Environmental Protection Agency (Great Lakes National Program Office), the National Geographic Society, Center for Field Research (Earthwatch Expeditions Inc.), and the Program for Ecosystem Research (Department of Energy).
