YanChing Zhang's areas of expertise are visualization, Internet and Information technology, and environmental sciences. Dr. Zhang is a leader in environmental visualization. She is currently leading the project on remotely sensed data visualization at US EPA Scientific Visualization Center. She has applied her expertise in many other visualization projects: visualizing the human exposure in cities; flow and dispersion inside street canyons; flow inside human lungs, and flow around structures. She has been worked with huge numerically-generated data on workstation and mainframe, output from Geographic Information System (GIS) software, collaborative visualization, as well as applying various emerging Internet technologies such as HTML, JAVA, VRML and collaborative visualization tools to achieve vivid Web sites. Here is one example of an interactive dispersion model based on Java technologies.

Dr. Zhang's recent contributions in information technology include a chapter on scientific visualization tools in Environmental Modeling III, Encyclopedia of Computer Science and Technology, and Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science. Her visualization result was featured on the cover page of the May (1996) issue of the Environmental Science and Technology (ES&T) magazine. She has been a reviewer for numerous professional journals and conferences. Dr Zhang is a member of the International Scientific Advisory Board for ENVIROSOFT 96 conference, and the International Editorial Board of Directors for ENVIRONews.

Prior her joining Lockheed Martin, Dr. Zhang held the position of Project Scientist and Senior Scientist at ManTech Environmental, Inc.. In her earlier years, she was involved extensively in the computational fluid dynamics modeling, both using numerical model and wind tunnel. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Master's degree in Environmental Sciences, both from Beijing (Peking) University, China, and Ph.D in Atmospheric Sciences from North Carolina State University .
